Pearled Spelt is a traditional Italian grain made from carefully selected spelt, an ancient species of wheat cultivated since approximately 5,000 BC. Grown in the Umbria region of Italy, it has a lighter flavour than traditional whole wheat, with a subtle sweetness and a pleasant nutty taste. The outer bran layer is gently removed to reduce cooking time while maintaining its naturally firm texture, making it a versatile and nutritious alternative to rice or pasta.
Use
Pearled spelt is ideal for soups, stews, grain salads, risottos and wholesome side dishes. Bring two parts of salted water to a boil, add one part rinsed pearled spelt and return to a boil. Reduce the heat to medium-high and simmer uncovered for approximately 30 minutes, or until tender. Drain any excess water and serve with vegetables, herbs, olive oil or your favourite seasonal ingredients.
